What To Bring

The number one tip we can give you for packing is to make a plan. Investing in a little bit of time before your trip can really pay off in: #1 not forgetting anything and #2 saving you money in excess baggage charges because you won’t be bringing stuff you don’t really need.

Make a meal plan. Discuss with your group what to have for each meal during your stay. Have one person be in charge of the grocery list instead of each individual bringing groceries. This will help avoid duplication of items or too many last minute add-ons. Stick to your list.

  • When buying groceries choose foods in powder form when available to keep your grocery weight down i.e. dry soup mix, powdered juice mix, coffee mate, etc. Limit the amount of canned goods.
  • No beverages in glass containers please!
  • Pack gear and groceries in sturdy, medium sized duffle bags, boxes or coolers. No “coffin” coolers please. Large and heavy items are difficult to load on the aircraft.
  • Co-ordinate items that can be shared between group members – i.e. toiletries, fishing equipment.
  • Make sure fishing rods are in cases or are taken apart and safely and securely tied together. Please ensure there are no hooks attached.

Remember that everything that goes into camp must come out again. This includes your garbage, so the less brought in, the less that needs to be brought out. If there is excess baggage on your flight out of Sas back to St. Andrews, which does not fit on the aircraft, the excess groceries will be left behind. We plan the outbound flights for groups to have less baggage than what they went in with. If you have just as much stuff coming out as you did going in – then you know you’ve brought too much stuff.
